When people view a home, small faults stand out far more than they should. A dripping tap or a door that won’t close properly makes buyers and tenants wonder what else has been left. The good news is that most of these jobs are quick, and many can be ticked off in a single handyman visit.
The ten jobs
1. Re-silicone the bath, shower and sink
Mouldy or peeling sealant is one of the first things people notice in a bathroom. Cutting out the old bead and running a fresh one is a small job that makes a room look years newer. See our bathroom repairs page for more.
2. Fix dripping taps
Often a new washer or cartridge is all that is needed. It also stops limescale marks building up in the basin.
3. Ease sticking doors and fit missing handles
Planing a door that catches, tightening hinges and replacing a loose handle makes the whole house feel solid. Our door and window service covers this.
4. Touch up paintwork
Scuffs on hallways, stairs and skirting boards are normal in a lived-in home. A fresh coat in the busiest areas lifts the first impression straight away — see painting and decorating.
5. Fill holes and cracks
Old picture hooks, wall plugs and hairline cracks can be filled, sanded and painted so walls look clean in photos.
6. Replace blown bulbs and tired light fittings
Bright, working lighting makes rooms look bigger. Swapping a dated fitting is a simple electrical job.
7. Tidy kitchen cupboards
Adjusting drooping doors, replacing broken hinges and fitting new handles is a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen. More on our kitchen repairs page.
8. Sort the garden and fences
A broken fence panel or overgrown border is the first thing people see from the back door. Our fencing and gardening services can get it presentable quickly.
9. Jet wash paths and patios
Clean paving makes a big difference to kerb appeal and to listing photos. See jet washing.
10. Check safety items
Make sure smoke alarms work, banisters are secure and window catches close. If you are letting a property, your letting agent can tell you which certificates and checks you need by law.
Do it in one visit
The easiest approach is to walk round with a notepad, write every small job down, and send the list in one go. A handyman can then plan the day and bring the right materials. Handyman James works on a fair hourly rate with no minimum hire period, so a list like this is usually very good value — see our odd jobs page for the kind of tasks covered.
Getting a property ready? Send your list through the contact form with your phone number and James will come back to you with a price.
