Handyman Services Across Essex

The full list of services offered by Handyman James — from a single shelf to a full home refurbishment.

Handyman James is a properly multi-skilled service. The list below covers most of what people regularly ask for, but it isn't exhaustive — if you've got something in mind that isn't on the page, please get in touch and ask. There's a very good chance I can either help directly or point you to a trusted local specialist.

I work right across Essex, from Chelmsford and Colchester through Southend, Basildon, Brentwood, Romford and Harlow to the smaller towns and villages in between. Free, no-obligation quotes for any work, fair pricing, no minimum hire period, fully insured and tidy workmanship from a tradesman who genuinely cares about getting the job right.

One Tradesman, Many Trades — Why It Matters

Most people, when something goes wrong with the house, end up phoning around. The shower's leaking, but while the plumber's here you'd really like the bathroom door rehung properly. The decorator's coming next week, but the wall needs filling first. The electrician you've got on speed-dial doesn't do plastering, and the chap who fitted the kitchen won't touch the wonky cupboard door because he's already onto the next job. It's exhausting, and it's expensive — every separate trade brings a separate call-out, a separate quote and a separate "I can do it in three weeks" delay.

Handyman James is the alternative. One number, one tradesman, and a properly broad set of skills. I started out as a professional joiner — that's where the carpentry, the cabinetry and the precision finishing comes from — and I've spent years adding the related trades on top. Plumbing, basic electrics, painting and decorating, roofing repairs, jet washing, fencing, garden landscaping, flat-pack assembly, tiling, silicone work, doors and windows, guttering and the rest. You get one quote covering the lot, one job booked in, and one person to ring when there's a question.

For the small minority of jobs that genuinely need a registered specialist — gas, certain Part P electrical work, structural alterations, asbestos — I'll be straight with you and bring in a trusted Essex contact, project-managing it on your behalf so you only ever deal with me. Either way, you spend less time chasing tradesmen and more time enjoying the finished result.

How a typical Handyman James job works

Step one: you fill in the contact form describing the work and roughly where in Essex you are. Step two: I come back to you within 24 hours with either a ballpark price or a request to come and look in person — for free. Step three: you receive a clear, written, itemised quote with no surprises and no minimum charges. Step four: we agree a date, I turn up on time, the work gets done tidily, and payment is due once you're happy. That's the whole process.

What about emergencies?

Genuine emergencies — a burst pipe, a fallen fence panel leaving a garden insecure, a broken window on the ground floor — get prioritised. Use the contact form as quickly as you can and include your phone number, and I'll do my best to attend the same day. I'd rather drop everything for a real emergency than have you waiting for help that never comes.

Pricing you can rely on

Small jobs are charged at a sensible hourly rate with no minimum hire period, so you only pay for the work that's done. Larger jobs are quoted as a fixed price after I've seen the work, with materials itemised separately so you can see exactly where the money is going. There are no hidden call-out fees, no "from" prices, and no end-of-job surprises. If something unexpected crops up midway through a job, I'll stop and explain it before doing anything that affects the price.

Areas I cover

The whole of Essex. The Areas page lists the larger towns I work in regularly, but I'm equally happy travelling to villages and smaller settlements — there's no extra charge for that, within reason. If you're in Essex and you've got a job, please ask. I'd rather hear from you and decide together than have you assume I'm too far away.
