Door Hanging and Repairs

Hanging a door properly takes more skill than people imagine. The frame needs to be plumb, the door needs to be the right size with the right gaps top, bottom and sides, the hinges need to sit in clean rebates, and the latch and strike plate need to align so the door catches first time without being pulled. Get any of these wrong and the door drops, sticks or fails to close — sometimes immediately, sometimes after a season.

We hang internal doors, external doors, fire-rated doors, French doors and bi-folds. Where an existing door has dropped, we re-hang it on stronger hinges or in better-fitted frames, plane it back to size, and adjust the latch. Most door issues are sorted in a single visit.

Window Repairs

UPVC windows last a long time but the working parts — hinges, locks, gaskets and handles — wear out long before the frame and glazing do. Friction stays go floppy, espagnolette gearing fails, locks seize, and gaskets go flat so the window draughts. We replace all of these components without replacing the whole window, which would be far more expensive.

Timber windows benefit from regular maintenance — sticking sashes need easing and lubricating, cords need replacing on sash windows, putty needs renewing and rotten cills need splicing or replacing. We carry out all of these repairs across Essex.

Draught-Proofing

Older Essex houses, particularly Victorian and Edwardian properties, lose enormous amounts of heat around the edges of doors and windows. A proper draught-proofing job — brush seals, foam strips, threshold seals, letterbox flaps and chimney balloons — typically pays for itself in heating savings within a single winter.

Sash windows are particularly draughty, and a proper sash window draught-proofing system using flush brush seals lets the window operate freely while sealing it properly when closed. The result is no rattle, no draught and a far quieter room.

Lock Fitting and Repair

Faulty locks are both an inconvenience and a serious security issue. We replace euro cylinders, mortice locks, sash locks and night-latches with British Standard BS3621-compliant locks where insurance requires it. We also fit anti-snap and anti-bump cylinders for added security against modern attack methods.

Lost keys, broken keys in locks, and seized locks after long periods of disuse are all everyday work for us. We can usually open a stuck lock without damaging the door.
