Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions I get asked most often by Essex homeowners.

Below are answers to the questions that come up most often when people get in touch about handyman work in Essex. If your question isn't here, please don't hesitate to get in touch through the contact form — I'm always happy to talk through a job before you commit to anything.
One general note before you read on: I genuinely don't bite. Quite a lot of people preface their first enquiry with "this might be a stupid question, but…" — and it almost never is. The whole point of a handyman service is that you can ask. So please do.
What does Handyman James do?
I'm a multi-skilled local Essex handyman covering carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting and decorating, roofing repairs, gardening, fencing, jet washing, flat-pack assembly and the hundred small jobs in between. If you can describe it, there's a very good chance I can either do it myself or bring in a trusted specialist to help.
Do you really do small jobs?
Yes — genuinely. A surprising number of tradesmen quietly avoid small work because it isn't profitable enough for them. I take the opposite view. Small jobs are exactly what the handyman service exists for, and I'd far rather come and put up three shelves and bleed a radiator than turn the work down. If you've got something that's been bugging you for months, please do ask.
Where in Essex do you cover?
All of it. I work across the entire county, from Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend-on-Sea right out to the smaller villages and the Essex–London border towns like Romford, Brentwood, Loughton and Buckhurst Hill. There's a full list on the Areas page — and if your town isn't listed, please ask anyway, because the list isn't exhaustive.
How much do you charge?
It depends on the job. For larger work I provide a free, written, itemised quote so you know exactly what you're paying before any work begins. For smaller odd jobs I work on a fair hourly rate, with no minimum hire period. There are no hidden extras, no surprise call-out fees, and the price you agree is the price you pay.
Are you insured?
Yes — I carry full public liability insurance for every job I take on, and I'm happy to share certificates on request. Insurance protects both of us if something unexpected happens, and it's something every reputable tradesman should have.
How quickly can you get to me?
For straightforward jobs I can usually book you in within a week, often sooner. For genuine emergencies — a burst pipe, a fallen fence panel, a broken window leaving the house insecure — I'll do my best to come the same day. Please fill in the contact form as quickly as you can with a clear description of the problem, your location and your phone number.
Do you provide a written quote?
Yes. For anything beyond the simplest small job I'll give you a clear, written, itemised quote in advance. That way you know exactly what's included, what isn't, what materials will cost and how long it'll take. No vague "from" prices.
Can you supply materials, or do I need to buy them?
Either works. I'm happy to supply materials and add them to the invoice at cost, which usually saves you the hassle of trips to the merchants. Equally, if you'd rather buy them yourself — perhaps because you've got specific tiles or paint colours in mind — that's completely fine.
Do you do gas work?
I don't carry out work that requires Gas Safe registration myself, but I work alongside trusted local Gas Safe engineers. If your job needs gas certification I can usually arrange it as part of the same project, so you only need to deal with one point of contact.
What about electrical work — are you Part P certified?
I do general electrical work like sockets, switches, light fittings and small wiring jobs. For notifiable electrical work that requires Part P certification, I work with a registered local electrician. Either way, you get safe, compliant work and proper paperwork.
Do you tidy up after yourself?
Always. Dust sheets go down, tools get put away, and any waste is bagged and either taken with me or placed somewhere you've agreed. It should look like a job has been done — not like a tornado has been through your house.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer is easiest for both of us, and that's how most customers settle up. Cash is fine too. Payment is due once the job is finished and you're happy with it, unless we've agreed otherwise upfront for a longer project requiring materials.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. If something I've fitted or repaired fails because of the workmanship within a reasonable period, I'll come back and put it right at no charge. Manufacturer warranties cover materials separately.
Can you handle a whole renovation, or just small jobs?
Both. I take on full bathroom and kitchen refits, larger carpentry projects, full external decoration and substantial garden builds, as well as the small odd jobs. For really large projects involving structural work or planning, I'll project-manage the trades for you.
Do you work weekends?
Yes, I work Saturdays as standard, with the same rates as weekdays. Sundays are reserved for genuine emergencies. If you can only meet at the weekend to discuss a quote, that's absolutely fine — just say so when you get in touch.
How do I get a quote?
The quickest way is to use the form on the Contact page — please include your phone number. Tell me what you need doing, where in Essex you are, and roughly when you'd like the work, and I'll come back to you within 24 hours.
Still got a question?
If your question hasn't been answered above, the easiest thing is to send me a message through the contact form. I read every enquiry personally, and I'll always come back to you with an honest answer — even if that answer is "I'd recommend a specialist for this one." Please use the contact form.
