Choosing the Right Fence

Different styles suit different gardens and budgets. Close-board fencing — vertical pales nailed to two horizontal arris rails between sturdy posts — is the strongest and most private style, and the right choice for a long boundary in an exposed location. Lap or feather-edge panels in standard sizes are quicker and cheaper, but offer slightly less long-term durability. Picket and post-and-rail are more decorative and suit cottage-style gardens. Trellis adds height for climbing plants without blocking light.

Concrete Versus Timber Posts

Posts are the most important part of any fence. They take the weight of the panels, the wind load and the wear of weather and ground contact. We install concrete posts as standard for almost all our fencing because they last decades longer than timber posts, do not rot at ground level (which is where timber always fails first), and stay rigid in storms.

Concrete posts are slightly more expensive than timber, but the saving over the life of the fence is enormous — most timber-post fences are replaced within ten years; a concrete-post fence with treated panels will easily last twenty.

Gates

Garden gates take more abuse than any other fence component. Children swing on them, dogs jump at them, and the wind catches them. We make and fit timber gates to suit any opening, and replace tired gates with new ones that close properly and stay closed.

Side gates with locks, double gates onto driveways, pedestrian gates with self-closers, child-safe gates with rising butt hinges — all are everyday work for us. Hardware is galvanised or stainless steel and properly mounted into solid posts.

Repairs and Storm Damage

After a winter storm, fence panels go down across the county. Where the posts are intact and only panels have blown out, replacement is quick and cheap. Where posts have snapped at ground level — which is where rotten timber posts always fail — those need to be properly excavated, removed and replaced before new panels can go up.

We attend storm-damage jobs across Essex throughout the autumn and winter and turn most repairs around within a few days. Where insurance is involved, we provide written quotes and photographs to support your claim.
