About Handyman James
The story behind your local Essex handyman — and why I do things the way I do.
Hello, I'm James
Welcome to Handyman James. I'm a fully insured local tradesman based in Essex, and for years I've been helping people across the county get on top of those long-running to-do lists, finish stalled projects and bring tired rooms back to life. I started out as a professional joiner — building staircases, fitted wardrobes, custom shelving and the kind of bespoke woodwork that only really makes sense when you genuinely care about the craft. Over time, customers kept asking whether I could "just sort out a few other bits while I was there," and the handyman side of the business grew naturally from that.
Today, Handyman James is what I'd call a properly multi-skilled service. I still do the carpentry that I was originally trained in, but I've added solid, reliable skills in plumbing, electrical work, painting and decorating, roofing repairs, garden maintenance, fencing, jet washing and — perhaps the thing I'm asked for more than anything else — the hundred small jobs that pile up around an average Essex home. Hanging pictures. Fixing wonky cupboard doors. Replacing the silicone around a bath. Putting up a flat-pack wardrobe. Bleeding a stubborn radiator. None of it glamorous, all of it the difference between a house that nags you and a home you can actually relax in.
Why I started doing this work
The honest answer? I got tired of hearing the same story from people I knew. Friends would tell me they'd waited three weeks for a tradesman to even ring back, only to be told the job was "too small to bother with." Neighbours would describe the indignity of being quoted hundreds of pounds for an hour's work. Older customers, especially, were being let down again and again — left with leaks, broken handles and dangerous wiring because nobody seemed to want the small stuff. It struck me that there was a real gap for someone who would just do the work properly, charge a fair price for it, and not make people feel awkward for asking.
That's the principle Handyman James was built around. I genuinely don't mind small jobs. In fact, I quite like them. There's something satisfying about turning up at a house with a list of niggles and leaving an hour later with the homeowner visibly happier. And of course, those same homeowners often have larger projects later on — a bathroom that needs replacing, a kitchen that's seen better days, a garden that needs taming — and over time we build up a working relationship that makes the bigger jobs run far more smoothly than they would with a cold-call tradesman.
Qualifications, insurance and how I work
I carry full public liability insurance for every job I take on, and I'm happy to share certificates if you'd like to see them. My carpentry training is the foundation of everything else I do, but I've topped that up with practical, hands-on experience across all the trades I now offer. For specialist work — gas, certain electrical certifications, asbestos and structural alterations — I work with trusted local specialists in the Essex network I've built up over the years, so even if a job needs a hand I can't legally give it, I can usually point you to the right person and project-manage it for you.
The way I work is straightforward. You get in touch, we have a chat about what you need, and I'll either give you an idea over the phone or pop round for a free, no-obligation look. Quotes are written, clear and itemised — no "from" prices, no surprises on the invoice. I take dust sheets, hoover up after myself, and treat your home the way I'd want a tradesman to treat mine. If something unexpected turns up mid-job, I'll stop and tell you about it before I carry on, so you're never landed with a bill you didn't agree to.
Working across Essex
I cover the whole of Essex from one end to the other — Chelmsford, Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Brentwood, Romford, Harlow, Braintree and dozens of villages in between. I know the local housing stock well, from the older Victorian terraces near the high streets to the post-war estates and the newer developments going up in places like Great Dunmow and Stansted. That matters more than you might think — knowing how a particular era of house was built means I can usually anticipate problems before they show up, and quote more accurately as a result.
What you can expect from me
- A reply within 24 hours. I check enquiries throughout the day. If you've sent something through and not heard back, please do nudge me — it's almost certainly a glitch rather than me ignoring you.
- An honest assessment. If a job is outside my skill set, or if you'd genuinely be better off calling someone else, I'll say so. I'd rather lose a quote than do a job badly.
- Tidy, considered work. I'm not the fastest tradesman you'll ever meet, but I am one of the most careful. I'd rather take an extra half-hour and leave it right.
- Sensible pricing. Hourly or fixed-price by agreement, free quotes for anything substantial, and no minimum hire period for small jobs.
- A long-term relationship. A lot of my work comes from people who first booked me for one small thing years ago and have called on me on and off ever since. That's how I'd like to work with you too.
