Roof Repairs

Most roof leaks are not caused by failed roofs — they are caused by a single failed point. A slipped or cracked tile, a lifted ridge cap, a perished lead flashing around a chimney, or a blocked valley can all let water in even though the rest of the roof is perfectly sound. Repairing the failed component is far cheaper than re-roofing, and is usually a half-day job.

Common repair jobs include replacing slipped or cracked tiles and slates, re-bedding ridge tiles using modern dry ridge systems, renewing lead flashings around chimney stacks and abutments, repairing valleys, replacing felt under the eaves, and clearing blocked gutters and downpipes that have caused water to back up under the tiles.

Emergency Roof Repairs

When a storm has lifted tiles or brought down a chimney pot, the priority is to get the roof watertight before any more damage is done inside. We can usually be on site the same day across most of Essex with tarpaulins, ladders and emergency materials. Once the roof is temporarily secure, we put together a quote for the permanent repair which can be carried out as soon as you are ready.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs over kitchens, dormers, garages and porches are a frequent source of trouble in Essex housing stock, particularly older felt roofs that are coming towards the end of their service life. Modern flat roof systems are far better — EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and high-performance felt all give 20-year-plus service lives when properly installed.

We replace flat roofs with whichever system best suits the building. Decking boards are inspected and replaced where they have softened, falls are corrected to ensure rainwater runs off properly, drip trims and edge details are formed correctly, and any junctions with surrounding walls are flashed with lead.

Fascias, Soffits and Guttering

The trim along the eaves of the house — the fascia board behind the gutter, the soffit underneath, and the bargeboard at the gable end — protects the ends of the roof rafters from weather. When it fails, water gets into the rafters and the damage spreads quickly. We replace tired wooden fascias with modern UPVC, install ventilated soffits that allow the loft to breathe properly, and renew the gutters and downpipes at the same time.

UPVC trim is virtually maintenance-free and lasts for decades. The work is usually completed in two to three days for an average semi-detached house.

Chimneys and Leadwork

Chimney stacks need attention every couple of decades — the lead flashing perishes, the cement haunching cracks, the pots loosen and the brickwork above the roof line takes the worst of the weather. We re-flash, re-haunch, re-bed pots, re-point brickwork and where necessary take down and rebuild stacks that have moved.
