Interior Painting

Most decorating projects start with the rooms inside the house, and the secret to a really good interior finish is preparation. Walls have to be cleaned, scuffs filled, holes patched, hairline cracks raked out and sealed, and any glossy old paintwork keyed before primer goes on. Cutting corners on preparation is the single biggest cause of paintwork failing six months later, and we never do.

Whether you want a single feature wall in deep heritage navy, a whole house in a soft modern off-white, or a set of bedrooms ready for a young family, we can advise on finishes — matt emulsion, durable matt for kitchens and hallways, eggshell for woodwork, satinwood for trim — and produce a finish you would be happy to put your name to.

We work in a clean and considerate way: dust sheets on every floor, masking around glass and switches, careful furniture moving and proper ventilation. At the end of every day the room is left tidy and usable, and at the end of the job we hoover up, take rubbish away and pack everything down properly.

Wallpapering

Done well, wallpaper transforms a room. Done badly, it is a nightmare. We hang lining paper, standard washable papers, paste-the-wall types, heavy embossed papers and feature wall murals. We are equally happy to remove old paper that has been on the walls for two or three decades and prepare the wall for emulsion.

Pattern matching, neat seams and clean cuts around switches, sockets, skirtings and architraves are what separates a professional finish from an amateur one. We measure the rolls needed properly so there is no nasty discovery halfway through the job, and we work in batch numbers so the colour matches the whole way around the room.

Exterior Painting

Essex weather throws a lot at our houses — wet winters, the odd hot summer, salt-laden winds in the coastal towns and lots of frosts. Rendered walls, masonry, soffits and fascias need to be properly washed, scraped, sealed and repainted every few years to stop water getting in. Handyman James uses long-life masonry paints and primers, with proper cutting in and tidy edges around windows and doors.

We supply our own access equipment — towers, ladders and edge protection where needed — and we work to safe practice for any work above first-floor height. Where scaffolding is required for taller properties or where the work is on a public face of the building, we will arrange that as part of the quote.

Woodwork, Doors and Trim

Skirtings, architraves, doors and window frames are the parts of a paint job that get noticed. We sand, fill, prime and apply two coats minimum, brushing or rolling depending on the surface. Glossed doors are properly de-nibbed between coats, and door edges are painted as well as the faces so the finish lasts.

We can also cut and fit new skirtings, architraves and dado rails where needed before painting, and replace tatty old door furniture for fresh handles, hinges and stops. The finished room looks complete in a way that a fresh paint job alone never does.

We will move and cover larger items, and we ask that you put smaller breakables away before we arrive.
