Pruning, Crown Lifting and Reduction

Most trees benefit from regular pruning. A crown lift removes the lower branches to let more light through to the lawn underneath. A crown reduction takes height off and shortens the tips of branches so the canopy is more compact. A crown thin removes selected branches throughout the canopy to reduce wind load and let dappled light through. Each is a different operation with different long-term effects on the tree.

We assess what the tree actually needs — based on the species, the position, the time of year and your reasons for wanting it pruned — and we prune in the right way for the right reason. Cuts are made cleanly, branch collars are respected, and we never top trees, which simply leads to weak regrowth and worse problems later.

Tree Felling

Felling a tree near houses, sheds, fences and overhead cables takes proper planning, the right kit and people who know what they are doing. We section-fell large trees down piece by piece using ropes and rigging, controlling the descent of every branch and trunk segment so nothing lands where it should not.

Where a tree can be straight-felled in one go — usually only on open ground — that is far quicker and cheaper, but it is rare in suburban Essex. Most domestic fellings are dismantled section by section over the course of a day or two.

Stump Grinding

After a tree is removed, the stump and the main root plate are left in the ground. Digging a stump out by hand is back-breaking work and damages the surrounding soil. Stump grinding is the right answer — a specialist machine reduces the stump and the upper roots to wood chip in a few minutes, well below ground level so you can re-plant or re-seed over the area.

We take the chips away or, if you prefer, leave them as garden mulch. The hole is back-filled with topsoil and ready for whatever the area is being used for next.

Hedges and Large Shrubs

Where a hedge or large shrub has got out of hand — a leylandii that has reached six metres, a huge laurel that has eaten its way out of the boundary, an unmanageable cherry — we can drop it back to a sensible size or remove it altogether. Hedges that are properly reduced regrow into a far more manageable size and shape over the following season.

We also remove hedges entirely where they are no longer wanted, including the root systems where they will interfere with new fencing or paving.

Tree Preservation Orders

Some trees in Essex are protected by Tree Preservation Orders or Conservation Area rules. Carrying out work on a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence. We always check the planning records before any work is quoted, and we will help you with a TPO consent application where one is needed.
