Why Masonry Paint Matters

Brick, render, pebbledash and stone all absorb water. In summer this does not matter; in winter, the absorbed water expands as it freezes and can cause spalling, cracking and the slow breakdown of the wall surface. Modern masonry paint forms a flexible, breathable, water-shedding skin over the wall that allows it to dry out while keeping driving rain out.

The paint also brings the wall back to a uniform colour, hides previous patches and repairs, and gives the front of the house a fresh look that is impossible to achieve any other way. A well-applied coat will last 10 to 15 years on a domestic Essex property.

Preparation Is Everything

Most masonry paint jobs that fail prematurely fail because the preparation was rushed. We do not rush. Walls are washed down and pressure-cleaned to remove dirt, algae and loose paint. Cracks are raked out and filled with the appropriate mortar or flexible filler. Damaged render is patched with sand-and-cement or fibre-reinforced repair mortar. Any damp patches are investigated and the cause sorted before paint goes anywhere near the wall.

Once the wall is clean and sound, a stabilising primer is applied where needed — particularly on chalky or previously distempered surfaces — and then two full coats of high-quality masonry paint are rolled and brushed on. Edges around windows, doors and downpipes are cut in carefully by hand.

Pebbledash and Render

Pebbledash is famously hard to repaint properly because of the rough texture. We use long-pile rollers and the correct paint to get full coverage into every dimple, going over the wall multiple times rather than the cursory single roll some painters give it. The result is a fully covered, crisp finish rather than a streaky one with the original colour showing through.

Smooth render needs different techniques but the principle is the same — proper preparation, the right paint, two full coats and careful cutting in. We can also re-render small failed patches before painting, so the wall looks uniform under the finished colour.
