Flatpack Assembly Service Across Essex

Flatpack furniture is wonderful for getting things into a flat, up a stairwell or through a narrow Victorian doorway. It is rather less wonderful when you are sitting on the floor at half past nine on a Sunday night surrounded by dowels, allen keys and a thirty-page instruction booklet that does not appear to be in any recognised language. Handyman James offers a fast, reliable flatpack assembly service across Essex for everything from a single bedside table to an entire kitchen full of cabinets.

Flatpack Assembly in Essex

What We Will Build

We have built more or less every flatpack item you can think of, from every retailer you can name. If you can buy it boxed, we can build it. Common jobs include:

  • IKEA bedroom furniture — PAX wardrobes, MALM beds, BILLY bookcases, HEMNES dressers
  • IKEA kitchens — METOD cabinets, drawers, plinths and cornice
  • Argos, Wayfair, Made.com, Dunelm and Habitat ranges
  • Wren and Howdens kitchens supplied flat for self-build
  • Office desks, chairs and filing cabinets
  • Dining tables, sideboards and TV units
  • Beds, divans, headboards and ottoman storage frames
  • Childrens' beds, bunks, cabin beds and play furniture
  • Garden sheds, summer houses and log stores
  • Trampolines, climbing frames and outdoor toys
  • Exercise bikes, treadmills and home gym equipment

Why Pay Someone to Build a Flatpack?

There are three good reasons. First, it takes far longer than the box suggests. A wardrobe that says 'one hour' on the side is rarely built in under three. Second, mistakes are expensive — a panel screwed in upside-down or a back board put on the wrong way round can leave you with a piece of furniture that looks fine but sags after a few weeks. Third, the heavy items need two people. Lifting a tall wardrobe upright on your own in a small Essex bedroom is a quick route to a back injury or a damaged ceiling.

We build hundreds of flatpacks a year, so we know all the small tricks: the order pieces actually need to go together (which is rarely the order in the booklet), where the awkward back-panel pins go, how to square a wardrobe so the doors hang true, and how to spot a missing fixing before you are halfway through the build.

How Our Service Works

Send us a message with the items you would like building, the make and model where possible, and your postcode. We will reply with a fixed price — not an hourly rate that creeps up — and we will tell you up front how long the job will take.

On the day, we arrive on time with our own tools, including the right cordless drivers, clamps and dust sheets. We unpack on a clean groundsheet, separate the parts, and work systematically. Cardboard and packaging is broken down for recycling and either left tidily for your next collection or removed entirely on request.

If you are buying multiple items, it is almost always cheaper to have us build them all at the same visit. We can also collect items from a local store and deliver them to you for a small additional charge — useful if you do not have a large enough car or live in a flat without a lift.

Wall-Fixing and Anti-Topple Brackets

Tall wardrobes, bookcases and chests of drawers must be fixed to the wall. Manufacturers supply small anti-topple brackets in the box, and we always fit them. We carry the right plugs and screws for plasterboard, brick, breeze block and even older Essex lath-and-plaster walls. If your wall hides a metal stud, dot-and-dab plasterboard or a stubborn party-wall surprise, we have the right fixings on the van.

We never cut corners on safety here. A toppled wardrobe is a serious risk for small children and pets, and the few minutes it takes to fix one properly is worth it every time.
