Emergency Boarding-Up

When a window has gone — vandalism, a stray football, a burglary attempt — the first job is to make the property secure. We can usually attend across most of Essex within a couple of hours during the day, board the opening over with sturdy plywood, fix it properly so it cannot easily be removed, and tape over to prevent draughts.

Once the property is secure, we measure up for the replacement glass and order whatever is needed. Most replacement glass is ready within 24-48 hours and we come back to fit it as soon as it is in.

Misted Double Glazing

Misted, foggy or condensation-filled double-glazed units are everywhere. The cause is a failed seal between the two panes — once the seal goes, moisture gets in and never leaves, leaving you looking through what amounts to a permanent fog. The frame and the rest of the window are usually fine; only the glass unit needs replacing.

We measure up the failed unit, order a new sealed double-glazed pane to the same specification (toughened where required by the position in the building, low-E coating for warmth, decorative leading and bevels where they were on the original) and refit it. Most replacement units are with us within a week and the whole replacement takes under an hour per pane.

Toughened and Safety Glass

Some positions in a building must be glazed in toughened or laminated safety glass under the building regulations — typically anywhere within 800mm of floor level, beside doors, and in bath and shower screens. We always replace like-for-like, but where the original glass was non-compliant we strongly advise upgrading to safety glass.

Toughened glass is around five times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into harmless small cubes rather than dangerous shards. The cost difference is small and the safety benefit substantial.

Mirrors, Splashbacks and Decorative Glass

We also supply and fit mirrors of any size, glass kitchen splashbacks in any colour, glass shower screens and decorative or stained-glass replacements where original Victorian or Edwardian leaded panels have been broken. Stained-glass work is specialised — we work with a skilled stained-glass repairer for these jobs and project-manage the work for you.
