Gutter Cleaning

Most gutter problems start with a blockage. Leaves, moss, twigs, tennis balls, the occasional dead pigeon — all build up over a year or two, and once the gutter is full it overflows at the lowest point. The water then washes down the wall, into the brick, and slowly causes damp inside.

We clear gutters thoroughly, removing the debris and flushing through with clean water to prove they are running freely all the way to the downpipe outlets. We can also fit gutter guards or hedgehog brushes that prevent leaves from settling — particularly useful on properties with overhanging trees. Most domestic properties take half a day to clean and the difference is immediate.

Gutter Repair

Common gutter faults include sections that have sagged out of fall and so do not drain properly, leaking joints between sections, cracked outlets at downpipes, broken brackets, and damage where ladders have been leant against the front. All are fixable without replacing the whole run.

We re-set falls back to a proper 1-in-600 gradient towards the downpipe, replace damaged sections, fit new brackets, and renew worn joint seals. The repair is invisible from the ground and lasts as long as the original.

Gutter Replacement

Where the existing gutter is past saving — usually a tired galvanised steel system from the 1970s, cast iron at the end of its life, or UPVC that has cracked and discoloured — we replace the full run. Modern UPVC guttering comes in a range of profiles and colours (black, white, grey, brown) to match the existing fascia and roof.

We replace fascia boards and soffits at the same time where they have softened, and renew the downpipes where they have cracked. The result is a fresh, properly sized rainwater system that will see the house through another two or three decades without further attention.

Fascias and Soffits

The fascia board is the timber (or now usually UPVC) board that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the underside of the eaves overhang. When timber fascias and soffits soften and rot, they take the gutter with them, and water gets into the rafter ends where it is far harder to fix later.

We strip out tired timber and replace with maintenance-free UPVC fascias, ventilated soffits and matching trim. The eaves are properly ventilated to allow the loft space to breathe, which prevents condensation and the cold-bridging problems that cause damp on bedroom ceilings.
